The Location

379 New Deal for Communites Office The Bridge New Deal for Communities is in the Seven Sisters area of Tottenham in Haringey, North London.

Before The Bridge New Deal for Communities began Seven Sisters had been identified as an area of urban deprivation. Crime, housing, education, health and employment were all identified as problems.

Where we are

The Bridge as an area has great potential. Two mainline rail services run through the area, and Seven Sisters Station is a major interchange on the Victoria Line. By public transport there is easy access to the City of London, the West End, Stratford and Stanstead Airport. The area is also well positioned for access to the A10 and North Circular.

Although Haringey is not an Olympic Borough The Bridge area borders with Hackney, which is. We are also only five minutes from Waltham Forest and 12 minutes from Stratford, the main Olympic site, European Terminal, and Stratford City (which will be the largest shopping centre development inside the M25).

Seven Sisters is an area of outstanding diversity. The varied and vibrant local culture is one of its unique features and this is one of the factors in the rapidly expanding local cultural industries sector.

Major changes

In its first few years The Bridge New Deal for Communities has made major changes. Our Crime Theme has been consistently identified as one of the most successful in the country, and crime in the neighbourhood has been reduced massively:

  • Vehicle crime is down 73%
  • Street Crime is down by 54.5%
  • Residents seeing kerb crawling and prostitution as a major problem is down by 49%
  • Residential burglary is down by 23%

All of this has been achieved against local and regional trends.

Since 2001 many improvements have been made to the local housing stock, with extensive works to bring the council housing up to the Decent Homes Standard, environmental improvements with over 800 new lamp posts installed, 15 new playgrounds created and much of the green space refurbished and improved.

On top of this a number of brand new state of the art facilities have been created including:

  • The Laurels Healthy Living Centre
  • The Triangle Children, Young People and Community Centre

Final phase

As The Bridge New Deal for Communities moves into its final phase capital projects are a priority with major developments planned to completely renew Wards Corner (above Seven Sisters Station), 341-379 Seven Sisters Road, St Ann’s Library Hall, Pulford Road, Chestnuts Park and the bridge over the junction of St Ann’s and Seven Sisters Roads. We believe that these major developments will sustain the regeneration of Seven Sisters well beyond the life of The Bridge New Deal for Communities programme.
