Griot
Bernie Grant Arts Centre launches with Griot (pronounced Gree-o).
Musical theatrical production created by and features a team of emerging young talent who are being supported by an esteemed team including Amani Naphtali whose past credits include the West End show, Daddy Cool and the box-office hit Ragamuffin. Playwright Sonia Hughes who has helped shape the script. Lyrics for the piece were written in collaboration with Mercury Nominee, Ty and Sound score was provided by Drew Horley who was also nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2004. The choreography has been led by Union Dance and vocals are produced by Eska Mtungwazi. There will also be special guests including Chi2 and Britain’s only black aerial artist, Upswing.

Tag Me V The City
Directed by Jonzi D - Tag, is a hip-hop theatre production in association with Sadler’s Wells that has been re-cast and re-staged. Performed with break-dancing, body-popping, life-size graffiti sculptures and video animation Tag tells the tale of a young man obsessed with graffiti.

The Early Years by ShortMan
The Early Years uncovers the journey of a teenage boy of African origin, raised in the England and discovering his identity. Falling victim to drugs and depression he subsequently separates himself from family life, using writing as his only means of self-expression.
Cool Rules

We use the Word ‘COOL’ to describe how we feel, how we look , how we behave and what we see. But what is the price of cool? What sacrifices will we make to keep our cool? What are the ‘Cool rules?’ We live with them everyday but only become aware of them in their absence. Curtis James will explore exactly what these Rules are.

Mary Seacole the Opera
Mary Seacole, the Opera is presented by one of the few black opera companies in the UK, Gyenyame For Performing Arts. This production is a fusion of Caribbean musical influences with Western operatic traditions. Voted Black Briton of the Millennium, Seacole was a Jamaican healer and businesswoman. Leading jazz vocalist Cleveland Watkiss performing alongside DJ Kevin LeGendre
Switching effortlessly from lead vocals to bass, falsetto to human beat box Watkiss’ is one of the co-founders of the Jazz Warriors. Wire/Guardian Jazz Awards voted Cleveland Watkiss best vocalist for three consecutive years.

Friday Eclectic Lounge: Tottenham Untold ft Hanny
Fitting in with the Tottenham Untold vibe (pg 18) this month’s Eclectic Lounge has a distinctive flavour celebrating what’s great and good about Haringey’s special cultural mix. With emerging artists like Cuban salsa writer and singer Hanny, whose mature love-drenched lyrics belies his tender years, this evening will represent Tottenham’s global unity.

Groove Therapy
Groove Therapy is our early week series of dance and music sessions to help you to enjoy the life-affirming, mental and physical pleasures of the creative experience. Or you could simply have fun! These sessions are for adults of any age or level of experience.
Mondays
Rhythm Nation (Age 18+)
If you are interested in Yoruba culture and would like to learn the ancient songs and praises of their ancestors and ancient drumming styles, then this session is made for you! Led by Kevin Haynes.

Looking to escape from reality into the dream world of Bollywood? This is an expressive dance session incorporating a fusion of Indian classical, folk, bhangra, Arabic, Latino, Hip Hop and funk styles with a touch of pure Bollywood cheese to top it all off! Led by Ruby Nayyar.

Urban Fusion (Age 16+)
A blend of underground Hip Hop and commercial street dance with the upmost flava, style and energy! Led by Kenrick ‘H20’ Sandy, a dancer, teacher, choreographer and artistic director of Hip Hop dance theatre company Boy Blue, who picked up an Olivier Award this year for their sellout show Pied Piper.

Viva Lambada! (Age 18+)
Lambada is a sensual and graceful Brazilian dance for couples. The rhythm is a fusion of Carimbó and Merengue, with the dance incorporating elements of Forró, Samba and Maxixe. Come on your own or bring a partner! Led by Solange Dias, leading teacher of Lambada renowned for her original style and passionate energy.

African Express (Age 18+)
Want to enjoy a unique and expressive fusion of African dance? The session draws from African dance forms such as Ghanaian, Ivorian, Nigerian, Senegalese and South African as well as Contemporary, Caribbean and Jazz dance styles. Led by Francis Angol, the Artistic Director of Movement Angol Dance Company.

Vocalize (Age 16+)
Develop your confidence in your vocal abilities by exploring a variety if styles from accapella and R&B to Gospel and Jazz in this dynamic session where you will learn vocal techniques such as breathing exercises, voice projection, tone production and performance skills. Led by vocal coach Jorel Mitchell.

Space invaders
Saturday is the day when children and young people take over our spaces! There’s something for all ages whether you’re four or sixteen! Learn new skills, make friends and express your creativity through dance, drama, music and multi-media.
DanceAdelic (Age 4-7)
DanceAdelic is a playful session that combines games and fun with street, contemporary and jazz dance.Children will be moving and grooving to the latest tunes and taken through movements and techniques designed to improve confidence, coordination and rhythmic awareness. What better way to keep fit and have fun, than to DANCE! Led by Su Davis.
10-11am
Sound Lab (Age 13-18)
The sound lab offers you the chance to produce your own songs and movie sound tracks, experiment with sound effects to TV/movie/cartoon clips and discover the range of creative possibilities within music production and sound recording. Led by Eve and Jess of the award-winning She Devil Music.
11am-1pm
Street Jazz (Age 8-12)
This fresh and funky session will teach you all the latest music video moves and get you heating up the dance scene with the freshest styles. Touching on elements from breakin’, contemporary, jazz and tap dance, Street Jazz will make you feel and look good, inside and out! Led by Carla Trim-Vamben.
11.30am-12.30 pm
Act Out (Age 8-12)
In a fun-filled atmosphere, the Act Out session is designed to awaken creativity, develop confidence and verbal communication and provide performance basics through theatre games, voice production and group improvisations. Led by Amanda Neuville.
1-2pm
Video Box (13-18)
This session is for all you youtube, myspace and facebook addicts and those who want to take things a little further! You’ll get techniques in video editing, adding effects, VJ skills and uploading your creations on to the Internet. Bring along any video camera or phone footage you have or use our sample. Led by David Brown.
1-3.30pm
Nu Skool (Age 13-18)
Taking you back in the day and up to the minute with all of the classic and new moves in Hip Hop. You will go through a variety of styles from popping, new style, street locking, krumping, new jack, house, b-boying and backing.
Led by our resident dancer/choreographer Kimberely Jay, who has appeared in a commercial for Nike and also a Madonna video!
2.30-4pm
Theatre Mix (Age 13-18)
Get to grips with the actor in you and express yourself through theatre! As well as fast-paced drama techniques, improvisations, games and short performances, this session will mix up theatre in our BGAC style, which can include music, spoken word and lyricism. Led by Oneness, Tottenhams’ own Drama Queen!

Step Up
Sunday sessions turn the spotlight on those with a passion for performance who want to develop their talents a little further. You’ll get more professional input and creative support to guide you through your next creative steps.
Contemporary Funk
Are you interested in how you can use funk style Hip Hop dance to compliment your contemporary technique? Or maybe you’re a popper who wants to take your stage skills to the next level? In this fun yet challenging and rewarding session, Curtis James uses ‘release based’ contemporary dance technique and fuses this with the ideology of popping to create movement that not only feels great to do but is also good to watch.

Contemporary/Ballet
This session is designed to develop contemporary dance technique and style, and is suitable for all levels of experience. It is led by Lee Clayden, a first class honours graduate of London School of Contemporary Dance. Lee has worked with the likes of Mark Baldwin, Siobhan Davies and Wayne McGregor, and also performed with Ricochet Dance Company, ENO, the Charnock Company, Random Dance Company and Richard Alston Dance Company. He is currently appearing in The Lord of the Rings musical.
