David Lammy in Shoot Out
On Friday 24th August David Lammy MP was took part in a penalty shoot out with young people at a football training session on the Tiverton Estate. The football training sessions were organised by The Bridge New Deal for Communities as part of its summer activities programme for young people. The daily football training sessions culminate in a tournament to be held at Chestnuts Park on Saturday 1st September.
David Lammy MP said,
‘Every parent and grand parent will know how important it is for young people to be involved in activities after school and at the weekend. It is fantastic that this astro turf pitch has finally been renewed so a new generation of young people growing up on Tiverton Estate can be involved and engaged in what we call the beautiful game.’
Tim Clark, Neighbourhood Services Theme Manager for The Bridge New Deal for Communities said,
‘Its not just about sport, its about quality of life too. The physical improvements that we are making to the area need to be matched by lifestyle changes. Where we have improved sports facilities young people are given the chance to get involved, active and healthy. Where we have made environmental improvements to the street scene we expect residents to do their bit to keep it looking good. I’m glad to say that the young people in Seven Sisters are leading the way and setting an example as active citizens.’
The Bridge New Deal for Communities has just invested £20,000 in refurbishing the football cage on Tiverton estate.
The refurbishment of the football cage was part of a range of works that have been taking place on Tiverton estate. In previous years these works have included substantial refurbishment and energy improvement measures to a number of the blocks. Last year John Masefield and Eckington House were brought up to the Decent Homes Standard. By the end of The Bridge New Deal for Communities programme over 300 homes on Tiverton estate will have been brought up to the Decent Homes Standard. This year works include the refurbishment of Fladbury Square (which will be completed in October 2007).
