NDC Staff becomes a Tottenham Heroes

MP David Lammy welcomed '6 Tottenham Heroes' to the Houses of Parliament on Monday, 17th December 2007. The MP for Tottenham, welcomed the winners of his Christmas Card competition to Westminster for a tour of the Palace and tea.

In September, David had written to the local community’s schools and councillors and newspapers, asking for people to put forward Tottenham residents who they felt were unsung contributors to improving the lives of others. A flurry of nominations produced a series of deserving winners, each with a unique story of local engagement. Each Tottenham Hero was then professionally photographed and has been featured on David Lammy’s Christmas Card for 2007..

The six winners were William Blake, Emma Goodman and MPower, Larry O’Mahony, Maria Joseph and our very own NDC Youth Manager Yemi Akinfenwa. After a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament, they met with David Lammy for mince pies and tea. Each person was presented with a framed print of his or her portrait, individually signed by the MP.

Yemi said, “I really enjoy working with young people that live in the Tottenham and  Seven Sisters area. I feel that young people such as the awarding winning LBP Youth Group and Stonebridge Youth group have demonstrated that young people can make an  positive change in their community and that young people should not be seen as the  problem but the solution.

David commented: “I decided to use the opportunity offered by my Christmas card – which is sent around the world – to highlight and showcase community service in Tottenham, and to show our area at its best. I was looking for the faces of Tottenham, and for the people who support this community day in, day out."
